Supporting Women Owned Business: Judith Treanor, Temples and Markets

Femeconomy’s Supporting Women Owned Business mini-blog series is intended to amplify how women led and women owned businesses are supporting each other, and to encourage more businesses to include women led and women owned businesses in their purchasing decisions.

Temples and Markets is a curated online store showcasing unique accessories, bags, jewellery and home decor sourced from ethical makers in S.E Asia. Every Product has a story.

At least once a year Temples and Markets also has a bricks and mortar pop up location in Sydney.

Which women owned and women led businesses do you buy from?

Business wise: All products in my store are sourced from S.E Asian social enterprises, artisan groups and designers. Overwhelmingly, approximately 70% of the brands I feature are female owned or female led, including Thailand based Zsiska Jewellery (my best selling brand), and Vietnam/Paris based E-MOI bags. Even the brands not owned/led by women are showcasing products handcrafted by female artisans.

Non-business purchasing: I favour small independently owned businesses. I use natural cosmetics purchased from Flora & Fauna and Zero Store – both female run. My favourite clothing store is local North Sydney boutique Harlem and Stone, owned by a husband and wife team.

My luxury self-care time (massage/pedicure etc) is enjoyed at Endota Spa, a spa chain owned by Melanie Gleeson.

Most frequent dining or takeaway choice (at least twice a month) is at the female owned authentic Thai restaurant chain Chat ThaiMatriarch/ Business Owner/ Single Mother Amy Chanta recently passed away but her daughter Palisa Anderson, who also runs their organic farm, will continue the legacy.

Who are your customers?

My store caters to the 35-70 mid to high income female demographic. Temples and Markets customers are eco-conscious, have a social conscience and love the idea of making a difference when they are shopping. They are often travel lovers who have fallen in love with S.E Asian design in the same way I have when they were travelling.

They definitely like to stand out from the crowd and are attracted to unique pieces – the products in my store are generally not found elsewhere in Australia.
